REFLECTION

EXPERIENCE

Coming into this semester, I knew that it would be much more tough as this is advanced. I am still surprised of the result I got last semester, I simply did not anticipate it. That just goes to show how unpredictable this module is, and I have learnt that throughout the course of this semester. Sometimes, the designs I hated end being the ones that my teachers liked, which was odd for me at first but then I started to see that design is very subjective. This time around, I felt like I was much more mature in term of handling criticism. Last semester, I cracked but I am proud to say that despite the challenge, and tons of negative feedback, I managed to prove myself at every point. Unlike last semester, I enjoyed all the projects given to me. Even though being conceptual was never my thing, this semester has taught me how to think at every decision I make, and for that I am grateful for. Also, the most challenging part was definitely the final project, as we were given so much freedom. I have always been the type of person to follow the brief, whether it be any subject, so when a rather vague brief was given to us, I panicked but I knew I had to face this challenge one day. I have always wanted to do something regarding my own country, as I left my home when I was just 10 years old and hasn't really lived there again ever since. Therefore, this final project was certainly special to me as the message "Stay True To Your Roots' is also a reminder to me, that no matter where I am, I'm still the kid that used to roam the streets of Male', Maldives. I would like to say a huge thank you to Mr Vinod and Mr Shamsul for constantly pushing me to be better by throwing all sorts of challenges at me. I used to dread typography but that has changed.

OBSERVATIONS

I observed that I became more hard on myself this semester, knowing that the stakes are high. I definitely did notice an improvement from last semester in terms of taking criticism well and understanding my mistakes. I noticed that I always, one way or another, rise back up from negative feedback as I have always been one to prove others and myself, and that energy only got stronger throughout the course of this semester. Last semester, I mentioned that I was slow and although I feel that I still did not work at the best pace, I still managed my time more efficiently than last time. I don't think that I can ever change the pace I work at fully but that's just because I am a slow person, I process things slower than others but I always find a way. Also, the classroom felt much more welcoming this semester which I think also played a part on how I was not as afraid to approach my teachers for feedback. The friendlier environment made me feel more relaxed to work and get things done without having to worry about anything else.

FINDINGS

I found that hesitation only lets you down further. What I mean is, I found myself sometimes hesitating to approach my work, even though I knew I could get it done. I hesitated to ask questions, even though I was not afraid of my teachers feedback. I think this hesitation came from my eagerness to understand and critique my own work without asking for help, and that was my downfall this semester. I struggled a lot trying to figure out the best approach for projects, especially the final project as I was clueless. I felt stuck during this project for the longest time and all I had to do was ask someone for just a little bit of guidance. I ended up wasting time hesitating about my work but finally, I reached for some help and instantly things started to click again and my motivation was back on track. So, even if you feel that you are prepared, you can never be too prepared and I learnt that asking for feedback doesn't make me any less of a designer, it is just part of the process of becoming a better one.
