AHMED BAAHY SUHAIL PORTFOLIO

“TIDAL” is a 2.5D animated teaser trailer, which is an original story inspired by my experience of the 2004 tsunami in Male’, Maldives. This teaser hopes to give the audience a taste of what to expect, without giving too much of the context away. The trailer will be executed using Blender's Grease Pencil.

Synopsis

Baahy eagerly runs to the beach but his excitement is short-lived as he encounters a Tsunami.. His grandma is back home cooking curry, with no idea what is transpiring outside. Parallel editing will be used between Maama and Baahy to cross-cut between their two locations in real time, and evoke a sense of tension through these contrasting elements.. As for the tsunami, I'm going to communicate its presence using subtle cues such as parallelism of the boiling curry, shadows, and most importantly, sound design, which is key in getting the idea across to the audience.

Character Design

The teaser trailer will consist of three characters; Baahy, Maama (grandma) and my brother (Yaz). Once I got a sense of their designs through my concept sketches, I went into Adobe Photoshop to finalize their character designs and color.

My main inspiration for my character designs stem from Studio Ghibli characters.

Baahy, is heavily inspired by Sosuke from Studio Ghibli’s Ponyo. His overall silhouette is made of of round shapes to convey his soft nature. The color blue represents his sensitivity.

For Maama, I took inspiration from Howl's Moving Castle’s Sophie. Purple is her main color as she is quite stubborn in my short story.

Yaz was inspired by a general set of Studio Ghibli's boy characters. He is protective of Baahy. Sage green is his color because he is wise.

Digital Triptych

This project was to make a triptych inspired from our own choice of the five Frank Sinatra songs provided. I chose to conceptualize "The way you look tonight" as it is one of my most favorite songs.

Recreating Ake Demo

Our project 2 was to recreate this ake demo soap commercial. We were split into groups of two in class and I was in the group that had to recreate the romantic version of the Thai commercial. Syaqiel and I were the actors for this and the rest of my group was involved with production.

Audial Story

Updated Story : It's almost midnight. Guy wakes up after taking a nap. He is woken up by an alarm and goes to the toilet to brush his teeth. There is television sounds coming from the apartment up top. After that he puts on some clothes and runs down the staircase to make some instant coffee. He hears teenagers partying outside from the kitchen window so as he makes the coffee, he shuts the window. He then finishes making his coffee, takes a sip, and walks over to his working table. He puts down his mug and sits down. He hears his loud neighbors on the other side of the wall. and their kids running around. He starts to doodle on his sketchbook using his pencil. He is greeting by his cat who wanders around him for a while. Shortly after, the doorbell rings multiple times. He hears kids outside laughing and running away.

"Jie" was a group project done in my free elective. I was in charge of the drawing aspect of this stillomatic. The rendering has a smudged effect to portray the sense of nostalgia.
